Group Training Session - Intro to Sequencing: Creating Your First Sequence

SKU: TSGRP-IntSeq-1

Intro to Sequencing is a beginner-friendly introduction to the fundamentals of creating an LOR sequence. We’ll explore how music, lights, timing, effects, and controllers come together to create a synchronized light show, and walk through the process of creating a basic sequence from start to finish.

No prior sequencing experience required. By the end of the class, attendees will understand the basic sequencing workflow and have the knowledge they need to begin creating their own sequences.

Dates & Times: Oct. 7th (Wed) - 1:00-2:00PM Eastern

1. Understanding Sequencing

What is a sequence?

  • A sequence is the set of instructions that tells your Light-O-Rama controllers what your lights should do and when they should do it.
  • The sequence is synchronized to music or another timing source.
  • Each light or lighting group is represented by a row of channels or props on the sequencing screen.

The basic concept:

Music → Timing → Effects → Lights

2. The Parts of a Sequence

A Light-O-Rama sequence consists of several important components:

  • Music/Audio – The song or audio track driving the sequence.
  • Tracks/Props – The lights and elements that make up your display.
  • Channels – Individual controllable lighting outputs.
  • Timing Grid – Determines when lighting events occur.
  • Effects – Define what the lights actually do.
  • Sequence Settings – Control information such as timing, sequencing mode, and other properties.

Understanding how these pieces fit together is the foundation of sequencing.

3. Timing — The Heart of Sequencing

Timing determines when something happens.

We will look at:

  • Measures and beats
  • Timing marks
  • Fixed timing versus musical timing
  • Selecting appropriate timing intervals
  • Why timing does not have to be extremely precise to create an effective sequence

Key concept: Good sequencing is not about putting an effect on every possible timing mark. It is about using timing to make the lights work with the music.

4. Adding Your First Effects

We'll introduce the basic Light-O-Rama effects used to control lights, including:

  • On / Off
  • Fade
  • Shimmer
  • Twinkle
  • Color
  • Basic movement and other effects as appropriate

We will discuss when and why you might use different effects rather than simply demonstrating where to find them.

5. Sequencing to the Music

A good sequence complements the music.

We'll discuss:

  • Listening for the beat
  • Identifying musical sections
  • Finding major musical changes
  • Using lighting effects to emphasize vocals, instruments, and beats
  • Repeating patterns
  • Creating visual "phrases" rather than sequencing every individual note

Think like a musician: Listen first, then sequence.

6. Creating a Simple Sequence

We'll walk through a basic sequencing workflow:

  1. Select a song.
  2. Create or open a sequence.
  3. Configure the sequence and audio.
  4. Add your props/tracks.
  5. Establish timing.
  6. Add basic lighting effects.
  7. Preview the sequence.
  8. Make adjustments.
  9. Save and test.

The emphasis will be on understanding the workflow, rather than creating a complicated finished show.

7. Preview, Test & Refine

Before putting a sequence into your display:

  • Preview it in the Light-O-Rama software.
  • Look for timing problems.
  • Check for effects that are too busy or distracting.
  • Verify that the lights behave as expected.
  • Test the sequence on your actual hardware when possible.

Remember: Your first version doesn't have to be perfect. Sequencing is an iterative process.

8. Sequencing Tips to Remember

  • Start simple.
  • Listen to the music before sequencing.
  • Don't try to sequence every note.
  • Use repetition to create visual patterns.
  • Leave some elements inactive so important effects stand out.
  • Don't be afraid to experiment.
  • Save your work frequently.
  • Watch your completed sequence from the audience's perspective.

The Goal

By the end of this class, you should understand the basic sequencing process and be comfortable opening Light-O-Rama and creating your own simple sequence.

Music + Timing + Effects + Creativity = Your Light Show

Class Structure

All class times are listed in Eastern Time. Please be aware of the start time if you are in a different time zone.

Each group training session lasts 60 minutes. During this time, an instructor will teach 40-45 minutes of prepared content on the topic. 15-20 minutes will be reserved for class questions and discussion. The instructor will determine if all questions should be saved for the end, or if questions can be asked throughout. Reference materials or any pre-class review items will be provided after sign up.

Sessions are not recorded by Light-O-Rama. Each instructor has the right to choose to allow you to record their session, or request that you do not. Please respect their choice. For pre-recorded training videos, click here.

Registration & Changes
